What is your Ratio?
Infants: 1:4 (1:3 as staffing allows)
Toddlers (12-24 months): 1:5
Toddlers (24-36 months): 1:7
Preschoolers (3-5 years): 1:10
School-Age (K-3rd): 1:15
What is staff turnover like?
We have a very low turnover rate for the early education field. Many of our teachers have been with us for several years.
What kind of education/training do your teachers have?
Our teachers have a general mix of college education combined with experience working with young children, some more than others. Every year our teachers receive a minimum of 15 ongoing education hours in the field of early education. This requirement is met through our weekly trainings (where teachers voluntarily meet during a lunch hour) and through 4 teacher in-service days per year.
What is your curriculum?
We use the Creative Curriculum and integrate Christian teachings from the Bible. The Creative Curriculum is based on the latest brain research about how children learn and grow. Teachers first create a relationship with each child, and then will develop a study based on their interests. Each study is flexible based on the children’s interest in the topic so it may last a week or as long as a month. The Creative Curriculum involves the children in learning about technology, social studies, literacy, science, music/movement and mathematics. The process is more important than the product in this curriculum (learning through failures and successes instead of focusing on what the end result will look like).
What place does religion have?
We are a Christ-centered program and part of the Calvary Temple Church that is non-denominational Christian. We accept families from all faiths and teach basic Christian values and principles as well as stories from the Bible. Our teachers pray with the children, sing Bible songs, and strive to be godly role models for the children. The older classrooms learn memory verses on a weekly or monthly basis depending on the classroom.
What guidance techniques are used?
Depending on the age and development level of the child as well as the specific situation, different techniques are used. We use positive guidance techniques that include redirection, time to think and discuss, the “work it out” space, and natural/logical consequences. The goal is to help children think and discover the motivations behind their actions and possible solutions to be used in the future.
What is security like?
Our school is protected with security cameras at the entrances as well as security doors. Upon enrollment each parent will receive a key-card to gain access to the building. A video monitoring system is located at our main entrance for visitors to buzz in at our reception desk. Our teachers are equipped with 2-way radios to stay in communication at all times whether inside or outside the building. Our best security is our wonderful teachers. Any person who the teacher does not know must provide photo-ID and be on the child’s authorized pick-up list before a child is released.
How often does the center close?
We are closed six major holidays and Good Friday. For Thanksgiving we close the Friday after. We are closed an additional four days throughout the year for teacher in-service and training days. Upon enrollment each family receives a calendar of our events and closures for the year.
What is your sick policy?
In general children who are too ill to participate in normal daily activities need to be kept at home. With illnesses that require antibiotics, the child must have a minimum of three doses at home or a doctor’s note saying the child is not contagious and able to attend group care. Upon enrollment families receive a copy of our Ill Child Policy, which lists symptoms to be looking for and when to keep your child home. Major illnesses such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) or RSV (respiratory virus) will be posted so you are aware of possible exposure. Classrooms are disinfected daily and teachers and children are taught to use proper hand washing techniques to prevent the spread of illness.
How does the waitlist work?
Our waitlist is first come, first serve. Families who already attend the center have priority on our waitlist. On a monthly basis as needed children transition to the next classroom based on their age and developmental level. This can create openings in a classroom.
Our program is open the full year and enrollment occurs as openings come available. In general, we can give a month’s notice of when a space is available. Names are only taken off the waitlist by request or if we have attempted contact with no results. For our infant program there is a waitlist application fee of $25.00 to keep a shorter list for those who have a high interest in our center.
What is the enrollment process?
When a space is available we will call our waitlist to fill the space. To guarantee your use of the space a non-refundable deposit is required with the remaining tuition amount due when the child starts. We will also make an appointment to complete the enrollment paperwork.
What kind of communication should I expect?
Written daily reports about your child’s day are given through take-home folders in the classroom. Quarterly newsletters from the center and memos are also sent home in your child’s folder. Feel free to speak with the teachers and if you would like a phone conference, one can be scheduled. We love to receive your input, ideas, and questions!
